Within Mark 12 we see that Jesus is speaking to the Pharisees, his authority has previously been questioned and Jesus is telling them a parable. For those who do not know what a parable is, it is a simple story used to teach a moral or spiritual lesson.
Now lets look at verses 6-8.
Verse 6-8 above shows us that Jesus tells the Pharisees that God has ONE son a beloved heir and this was the LAST that God was to send for the vinedressers to give him fruit. Instead of welcoming him and giving him the fruit as God intended they chose to kill him. It does not say why they did this but if we think about it for a moment, it could have been pride, arrogance, greed whatever it was that rose inside their hearts they wanted God's inheritance for their purposes. They were blind, perhaps by religion, tradition, or law but instead of doing what God wanted them to do they chose to do it their way.
Jesus quotes the scripture written before him from Psalms 118:22 to confirm what he is saying. The Pharisees knew that It was against them so they decided to leave.
Imagine being in the presence of the messiah, the son of the living God, and being told that you have ignored the last son God has given. But because you choose to kill him and take the inheritance for yourselves instead, would your heart not be heavy?
Because their hearts were hardened and more inclined for themselves they could not understand fully what Jesus was saying, they knew that he was speaking against them but they did not understand the depth of this parable
We must understand what the stone and chief cornerstone is to grasp the knowledge of this parable.
The Stone: Jesus, the beloved son.
Chief Cornerstone: It is the first stone laid stone in a building's foundation.
It sets the direction for the entire structure and bears the weight of the building.
Christ Jesus is the cornerstone. He is the first stone laid for the foundation of the Body of Christ, the Church. He sets the direction and structure of how the church should be. He is the living walking example of what to do and how to act, how to pray, how to fast.
As believers in Christ, we should turn our eyes and focus on him, there is nothing that God cannot do for us. Ask and you shall receive, be expectant for answered prayer for God's beloved son died on the cross for us so we could have full life with God. A relationship of love and intimacy and know him truly.
Take some time and reflect on this parable, what is God saying to you today?
If you think you can't hear God then spend some time with him, sit with him, talk to him, pray with him, sing to him, go for a walk with him, put some worship music on and take the time to focus on him and more importantly read His word. The only way we will know him is to spend that time with him.
